Né le 22 novembre 1913 à Lowestoft (Suffolk), mort le 4 décembre 1976 à Aldeburgh.
Pianiste, Britten a travaillé la composition avec Frank Bridge, puis avec John Ireland au Royal College of Music. Il obtient son premier succès avec ses Variations sur un thème de Frank Bridge (pour orchestre à cordes) au Festival de Salzbourg en 1937.
Britten a abordé tous les genres musicaux, particulièrement la musique à texte, et l'opéra : plus d'une quinzaine d'œuvres lyriques depuis Paul Bunyan, en 1941 jusqu'à Death in Venice, en 1973.
Il écrivait pour des circonstances précises et des artistes particuliers (l'English Opera Group, son compagnon le ténor Peter Pears ou le violoncelliste Rostropovitch).
Créateur de la mélodie anglaise moderne, Britten produisit également beaucoup de musique pour les enfants et pour les amateurs : Gemini Variations (1965), The Golden Vanity (1966)
Comme Max Reger, Benjamin Britten puise son inspiration dans le passé, particulièrement la musique de Purcell, et dans les écritures plus contemporaines de Gustav Mahler et de Dmitri Chostakovitch, voire après un voyage à Bali et au Japon en 1956, la musique orientale.

Compositeur tout aussi lyrique que caustique, il se distingue particulièrement dans les compositions vocales, notamment en 1951, avec Billy Bud, célèbre opéra sans rôle féminin dans un univers prosaïque de marins et d'homosexualité explicite. Il compose également abondamment pour des ensembles vocaux d'enfants et d'amateurs.
il est aussi un remarquable pianiste. Il accompagne des monstres sacrés comme la mezzo-soprano Kathleen Ferrier ou le violoncelliste Rostropovitch, mais aussi tout au long de sa vie, son compagnon le ténor Peter Pears.
À partir de 1948, son nom est attaché au festival d'Aldeburgh, créé avec Peter Pears et le librettiste Eric Crozier, pour leur troupe d'opéra, l'English Opera Group.
Il est aussi chef d'orchestre, dont le baryton Fischer Diskau, récemment disparu se souvient dans ses mémoires de 1987 :

Selon les critères actuels, sa musique n'était pas absolue. Cela lui valut souvent un jugement inadéquat, mais néanmoins peut-être agréable à ses yeux : il fait encore de la musique. Il ose en faire. Il est l'après-garde.
Britten a peut-être été snob, mais sa musique ne m'est jamais : elle est drue, cruelle, bouleversée et bouleversante sans concession, pure de toute hypocrisie.
Les premiers troubles cardiaques se manifestent en 1968, il meurt partiellement paralysé en 1977.
